چکیده

Zero-kinetic-energy (ZEKE) photoelectron spectra of metalcarbide anions are presented, allowing a high resolu tion spectroscopic access to intermediates in catalytic reac tions of hydrocarbons on metal surfaces. As a first compound, FeC2 (an intermediate of the iron/acetylene system) has been chosen. Important for successful ZEKE spectroscopy was a special anion source and the selection by time-of-flight mass spectrometry. In addition, conventional laser induced photo detachment photoelectron spectroscopy in combination with our anion source and mass analyzer delivered valuable new information.

Ambient preparation and reactions of gas phase silver cluster cations and anions.

Electrospray ionization of metal salt solutions followed by ambient heating transforms the resulting salt clusters into new species, primarily naked ionic metal clusters. The experiment is done by passing the clusters through a heated coiled loop outside the mass spectrometer which releases the counter-anion while generating the anionic or cationic naked metal cluster. The nature of the anion i...

Catalytic and Non-catalytic Conversion of Methane to C2 Hydrocarbons in a Low Temperature Plasma

The direct conversion of methane to C2 hydrocarbons, in a quartz tube reactor enforced by a DC corona discharge, was investigated at atmospheric pressure. The process was carried out in the presence of metal oxide catalysts of Mn/W/SiO2, Mn/W/SiO2 (tetraethyl orthosilicate, TEOS), and Mn/W/CNT (supported on carbon nanotubes). The total yield to C2 hydrocarbons in the presence of metal oxide cat...

EPR study of highly stable methyl radicals trapped in synthetic H-rho zeolite

The hydrocarbon radicals are among the most fundamental and important reactive intermediates which are of wide interest in chemistry. A number of EPR investigations have been carried out concerning hydrocarbon radicals isolated in low temperature matrices of halocarbons [14, 17, 21], noble gases [5, 8, 9, 12], organic crystals [11] as well as adsorbed on porous surfaces [7, 15]. However, the st...

NOx Interactions with Dispersed BaO: Adsorption Kinetics, Chemisorbed Species, and Effects of Oxidation Catalyst Sites

BaO adsorbents, together with transition metal catalysts, can be used to trap smog-causing NO from combustion effluent streams that lack CO or residual hydrocarbons as reductants. 3 Transition metals catalyze NO oxidation to NO2, a molecule that readily adsorbs on many porous solids, but which also inhibits NO oxidation by titrating active sites on catalytic surfaces with oxygen atoms. 8 As a r...

Uv/vis Absorption Experiments on Mass Selected Cations by Counter-ion Introduction into an Inert Neon Matrix

Obtaining UV/Vis absorption spectra of cations is a challenging endeavor due to the low densities that can be achieved in the gas phase. In matrix isolation, ions of interest are accumulated in a cold inert matrix of a rare gas (e.g. Argon, Neon) until sufficient concentrations are attained for direct spectroscopic characterization . Nonetheless, in order to ensure neutralization of the matrix,...
